Commercial – Branded Battenbergs that are mass-produced and sold by the major retail/supermarket outlets of the UK.
 Independent (Indie) – Non-Branded Battenbergs that are made by small, independent bakeries and sold at local outlets. Novelty – Battenberg products that could fall into Commercial or Indie, but are not considered a traditional Battenberg cake (e.g. pink & yellow genoese sponge with almond flavoured wrap).

  The task of reviewing Battenberg Cakes presents the expert taster with some very real challenges, such as ensuring;

  The Battenberg Experience has therefore devsied a review methodology to overcome these challenges.  
  Review Methodology  
  A scientific assessment of a Battenberg Cake is facilitated by adhering to the following strategy;  

 
  Product Quality
    Assessed against five attributes (refer Assessment Framework), each given a proportion of the overall result, in accordance with their percieved importance.
  Product Value
    Cost per 100g is calculated.
  Results Presentation
    "Battenberg League Tables" and "Cost Comparison Table" compare Quality and Value respectively.
  Results Comparability
    "Cost Comparison Table" combines quality and cost.
